SOC 200 - Gender in Society


Number of Credits: 3
Explore the ways that gender and gender roles are learned, expressed, influenced, and portrayed, primarily in the United States. Analyze the role of sex, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity as systems of stratification. Examine the intersection of sex, gender, and other social identities in society today. (Fall, Spring) Three hours lecture each week. Three Credits. Three billable hours.


Pre-requisite(s): ENGL 101  .
Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Apply social science theories and principles to questions related to sex, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

2. Analyze concepts and contexts of sex and gender and their intersections with other social and cultural identities such as race, ethnicity, social class, and sexual orientation.

3. Examine contemporary issues related to inequality based on sex, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity.  

4. Analyze gender socialization and expression, from masculinity to femininity.
