The mission of the Visual Art program is to equip graduates with the creative skills essential to prepare them to transfer in to a four-year program or to maintain their own studio practice. By providing students with experience in a range of art media and instructional methods, the program lays a broad foundation in studio production. The program emphasizes autonomy, knowledge of the diversity of art worldwide, and creative problem solving skills conducive not only to the making of art but also to lifelong learning. This description aligns with the institutional mission of student empowerment and creative enrichment.

Program Goals


Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate skillful methodology via the congruous usage of tools and materials specific to the studio media.
  2. Illustrate comprehension of the elements of art and principles of design in the creation of aesthetically sound works of art.
  3. Effectively formulate evaluations of works of art, both theirs and others, in the form of verbal critique that utilizes core visual concepts, art historical awareness, and cultural awareness relative to the studio medium.
  4. Arrange and maintain a body of work in the form of a portfolio which clearly distinguishes and supports their artistic development and maturity.

Student Notices


The following courses are required for this concentration: ART 105 , ART 110 , ART 120 , ART 130 , ART 135 , ART 136 , and ART 210 , ART 220 , or ART 230  

Diversity requirement: take ENGL 102  and an additional Diversity General Education  course.
