EDUC 121 - Directed Practicum for Introduction to Education


Number of Credits: 1
Engage in a structured directed practicum in local public schools. Observe students and teachers at the grade level students wish to teach. Apply concepts learned in EDUC 120 to the classroom experience. Work with students in small groups and one-on-one to provide a transition from theory to practice. Students (including Transfer students) must be in good academic standing (2.0 GPA).  (Fall & Spring Only) Schedule varies by week One Credit. One billable hour.

Pre-requisite(s): Good academic standing (2.0 GPA or higher).
Co-requisite(s): EDUC 120  
Course Topics:
 

  1. Knowledge, skills, and professional teaching dispositions necessary to help all students learn. 
  2. Approaches to learning/teaching.
  3. Directed observations of learners, teachers, instruction, and programs in an elementary, middle, and/or high school. 
  4. Curriculum construction as responsive to developmental, cultural, and social needs of children. 
  5. Roles and responsibilities of teachers.
  6. Contemporary educational issues and how they affect the field experience classroom/school. 

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
 

  1. Explore the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to help all students learn. (GE 1, 2, 6, 7 PG 1, 2, 3)
  2. Reflect on the different approaches to teaching. (GE 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 PG 1, 2, 3)
  3. Analyze observations of learners, teachers, instruction, and programs in an elementary, middle, and or high school. (GE 1, 2, 7 PG 1, 2, 3)
  4. Identify the roles and responsibilities of the elementary, middle, and or high school teacher. (GE 1, 2, 7 PG 2, 3)
  5. Recognize a professional code of ethics and the behaviors of professionals that enhance and impede learning. (GE 1, 2, 7 PG 1, 2, 3)
  6. Identify contemporary educational issues and how they affect the field experience classroom school. (GE 1, 2, 6, 7 PG 1, 2, 3)
  7. Integrate observations from the directed practicum into reflective course assignments as well as teaching and classroom management practices.(GE 1, 2, 6, 7 PG 1, 2, 3)
