ENGR 102 - Statics Number of Credits: 3 Study the equilibrium of stationary bodies under the influence of various kinds of forces. Solve problems including forces, moments, couples, equilibrium, frames and machines, centroids, moment of inertia, and friction; vector and scalar methods are used. (Fall Term Only) Three hours lecture each week. Three Credits. Three billable hours.
Pre-requisite(s): PHYS 111 and MATH 135 , with minimum grades of C or better. Course Topics: Vectors, free-body diagrams, moment of a force, Principle of Moments, resultant forces of systems and distributed loads, trusses, frames, friction, centroids, center of mass, area moment of inertia and hydrostatics Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Express vectors in terms of their rectangular coordinates. (PG-1)
- Compute the resultant of forces acting on an object. (PG-1)
- Sketch the free-body diagram of a particle in equilibrium and solve for unknown forces acting on it. (PG-1, 2, 5)
- Determine the moment of a force and use the principle of Moments to determine the net result of a number of forces acting on a single point. (PG-1)
- Calculate the magnitude and direction of a moment of a couple. (PG-1)
- Replace a system of forces and couples with a single force and a couple. (PG-1, 2)
- Compute the magnitude of the resultant of a distributed loading. (PG-1)
- Sketch the free-body diagram of a rigid body in equilibrium and solve for unknown forces acting on it. (PG-1, 2, 5)
- Determine the forces in members of simple trusses, frames and machines. (PG-1, 2, 5)
- Locate the centroid of areas and volume. (PG-1)
- Compute moments of inertia for areas. (PG-1)
- Compute a resultant hydrostatic force. (PG-1)
