ELL 070 - American English Pronunciation

Practice correct articulation, word and sentence stress, rhythm, and intonation of American English to communicate clearly and effectively in the community and the workplace. This course is intended for students whose native language is not English. (Fall, Spring & Summer Only) One hour lecture each week. Zero Credits. One billable hour.

Pre-requisite(s): Chair approval.
Course Topics:
Syllables, dipthongs, identifying stressed syllables, linking and blending sounds, and identifying ‘stressed’ content words in a sentence
Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
 

  1. Pronounce vowel and consonant sounds, including common consonant clusters
  2. Apply syllable rules
  3. Use word and sentence stress, rhythm, and intonation patterns in speech
  4. Produce sentences using linking and blending
  5. Utilize digital tools to practice pronunciation skills
