ENGL 100 - Focus


Number of Credits: 3
Engage in project-based learning to achieve personal and group goals. Develop and apply literacy skills. Discover college resources. Participate in community-building events. Recommended for students transitioning into college. This course does not meet the English writing General Education requirement.

  (Fall, Spring & Summer Only) Three hours lecture each week. Three Credits. Three billable hours.

Pre-requisite(s): Score of 250 or higher on Accuplacer Next Gen English placement test or high school GPA of 2.5 or higher. 
Course Topics:
1. Self-awareness of academic, social, and employment skills and habits of being

2. Exploration of college resources and opportunities

3. Self-Design (sometimes called self-authoring): defining values, setting goals, overcoming obstacles, reaching milestones

4. Developing and applying literacy skills: listening, reading, discussing, questioning, inquiring, speaking, and interacting 

 

 
Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
 

  1. Define personal values and goals in relation to college 

  1. Identify college resources helpful in achieving goals 

  1. Develop habits of mind and well-being that promote goal setting and achievement 

  1. Apply literacy skills to deepen understanding of texts in varying modes 

  1. Collaborate in small groups  

  1. Create multi-modal presentations 

  1. Reflect on personal and academic growth
