CRIM 109 - Corrections Law Number of Credits: 3 Review the rights of prisoners and the major cases pertaining to the rights of inmates. Explore use of force, visitation, freedom of association and religion, disciplinary due process, and the rights to rehabilitation, medical care, and legal services. Special attention will be paid to the criminal and civil liabilities attached to correctional officials. This course is open to Law Enforcement Academy students only. (All Terms) Three hours lecture each week. Three Credits. Three billable hours.
Pre-requisite(s): CRIM 102 . Pre-/Co-requisite(s): This course is for law enforcement personnel who have completed or are enrolled in a certified police academy. This course is not for general credit students.
Course Topics: - Use of Force policies ans civil rights
- Religious freedoms.
- Due process
- Legal services. Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify the limits on the use of force in a correctional setting.
- Discuss a prisoner’s rights related to visitation, association, mail, telephone use, isolated confinement, religion, legal services, disciplinary due process, parole, rehabilitation, medical care, and life.
- Discuss civil and criminal liabilities attached to the violation of prisoner rights.
- Compare rights of prisoners in America with those in other countries.
