LEA 102 - Defensive Tactics Number of Credits: 3 Defensive Tactics Employ defensive tactics for personal safety and situations that require defensive strategies as a police officer. Through vigorous conditioning exercises, practice skills in perception, analysis, escape, compromise, avoidance, blocking, throwing, and striking. This course is only available through an accredited policy academy. Available to Police Academy Students only. Three hours lecture each week. Three Credits. Three billable hours.
Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify the points of the body that are susceptible to lethal weapons.
- Discuss the legal considerations in using a chemical agent.
- Demonstrate use of force to control a suspect or prisoner.
- Demonstrate take-down tactics.
- Practice basic principles of weaponless defense including balance, awareness, and self-control.
- Articulate the legal limits of reasonable force and deadly force in Maryland.
