MAT 091 - Pre-Algebra

Apply operations with fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, percentages, and order of operations. Calculate measures of center; evaluate variable expressions; and solve linear equations. (Fall & Spring Only) Four hours lecture each week. Zero Credits. Four billable hours.

Pre-requisite(s): Placement into ENG 001   or higher, plus satisfactory MAT placement measure, or Academic Center approval.
Course Topics:
Place value of whole numbers and decimals; operations with integers, fractions, and decimals; converting between fractions, decimals, and percent; translating and solving linear equations; applications of perimeter, area, percent, rates, and proportions; calculating measures of center; using rounding and estimating strategies to assess reasonable outcomes.  
Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
 

  1. Apply concepts of place value to whole numbers and decimals
  2. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers, fractions, and decimals.
  3. Use the order of operations to simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions.
  4. Solve linear equations in one variable that contain integers, fractions, and decimals.
  5. Convert between fractions, decimals, and percent.
  6. Translate words into mathematical expressions and equations.
  7. Apply perimeter and area formulas to solve problems.
  8. Use percent, rates, and proportions to solve problems.
  9. Calculate measures of center.
  10. Use rounding and estimating strategies to assess reasonable outcomes.
