HIST 298 - World War II, The Global Conflict

Explore the global history of the Second World War, especially the theaters of war and related events in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific in relation to their impact on the Allied political and military objectives. Examine the perspective of the United States, Great Britain, other Allied nations, Japan, and Germany. Investigate the role of diplomacy and strategy; the impact of war upon society; and the fighting on land, at sea, and in the air. Analyze the war’s political, social, and military impact on the global community.  Three hours lecture each week. Three Credits. Three billable hours.

  8. Pearl Harbor, The Fall of the Philippines, and Bataan
  9. Midway and the Battle of the Pacific
  10. Guadalcanal, The Aleutians, and Tarawa
  11. North Africa and Italy
  12. The Air Battle in the Pacific and Strategic Bombing in Europe
  13. D-Day to Berlin
  14. Island Hopping, Iwo Jima to Okinawa
  15. The Atomic Age

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
 

  • Explain the impact of World War II on human civilization. 
  • Evaluate World War II’s political, social, economic, and military impact on global population centers and human civilization.
  • Identify important World War II cultural encounters, conflicts, patterns, and outcomes. 
  • Interpret written, oral, visual, digital, and historical data and evidence of the war. 
  • Analyze the impact of World War II on race, culture, political power structures, and global alliances. 
  • Develop written compositions on historical topics that portray a crucial understanding of the impact of World War II. 
  • Explore World War II as a conflict with implications that resonate on a global scale.
