DFAB 104 - Intro. to Subtractive Manufacturing Number of Credits: 3 Shape materials using CNC mills, laser cutters, and carving machines. Convert digital designs into physical objects through subtractive processes. Create 2D and 3D models using CAD/CAM software; prepare files for production. Develop skills in vector graphics, engraving, and machine setup for applications in manufacturing and prototyping. (Spring)Two hours lecture each week. Two hours lab each week. Three credits. Three billable hours.
Pre-requisite(s): eligibility for ENGL 101 and exemption/completion of MAT 094 , MAT 015 , or MATH 113 .
Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Analyze recent developments in machining and fabrication processes for the production of engineering components and their main areas of application and limitations.
- Create physical objects that satisfy product development and prototyping requirements using advanced subtractive manufacturing devices and processes.
- Demonstrate the basic procedures and concepts of programming, set-up, and operation of various subtractive manufacturing technologies for manufacturing simple parts.
- Analyze how the physical principles behind the operation of various subtractive manufacturing processes can be used to monitor process capability and performance.
- Apply design rules and fabrication techniques in the manufacturing of dimensional components.
- Assess different manufacturing processes for the high volume manufacturing of dimensional components.
- Evaluate the benefits and limitations of subtractive and additive manufacturing processes.
- Create geometry and toolpaths from specifications on a blueprint for simple parts using CAM software.
- Evaluate the benefits of leveraging subtractive manufaturing tools in the creation of design artifacts.
- Design functional prototypes that apply design principles that meet specific human factors and form function criteria.
