MATH 243 - Introduction to Linear Algebra and Differential Equations


Number of Credits: 4
Explore linear algebra and differential equations to model and solve applied problems; analyze systems using matrices, vector spaces, eigenvalues, and eigenvectors; apply Laplace transforms and differential systems to engineering and physics contexts; utilize mathematical software to construct, interpret, and evaluate models for real-world applications.(Spring)Five hours of lecture each week. Four credits. Four billable hours.


Pre-requisite(s): MATH 136  with a minimum grade of C or satisfactory MATH placement measure.

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Define and analyze vector spaces, bases of vector spaces and subspaces, inner products, projections, and linear transformations.
  2. Use matrix arithmetic (e.g., multiplication, inversion, determinants) to solve linear systems and represent transformations.
  3. Analyze the behavior of solutions to first-order and second-order differential equations in applied contexts.
  4. Examine the properties of eigenvalues and eigenvectors and their role in solving systems of differential equations and diagonalizing matrices.
  5. Construct mathematical models that integrate linear algebra and differential equations to solve interdisciplinary problems, using software tools like MATLAB.
