MATH 243 - Introduction to Linear Algebra and Differential Equations Number of Credits: 4 Explore linear algebra and differential equations to model and solve applied problems; analyze systems using matrices, vector spaces, eigenvalues, and eigenvectors; apply Laplace transforms and differential systems to engineering and physics contexts; utilize mathematical software to construct, interpret, and evaluate models for real-world applications.(Spring)Five hours of lecture each week. Four credits. Four billable hours.
Pre-requisite(s): MATH 136 with a minimum grade of C or satisfactory MATH placement measure.
Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Define and analyze vector spaces, bases of vector spaces and subspaces, inner products, projections, and linear transformations.
- Use matrix arithmetic (e.g., multiplication, inversion, determinants) to solve linear systems and represent transformations.
- Analyze the behavior of solutions to first-order and second-order differential equations in applied contexts.
- Examine the properties of eigenvalues and eigenvectors and their role in solving systems of differential equations and diagonalizing matrices.
- Construct mathematical models that integrate linear algebra and differential equations to solve interdisciplinary problems, using software tools like MATLAB.
