The purpose of the Associate of Arts degree program in Teacher Education is to prepare students to transfer to secondary and special content programs not covered by the A.A.T. including middle school (4th-8th grade), secondary social studies (7th-12th grade), and physical education, music, and art (Pre-K-12th grade). Through student-centered instruction, advising, service learning opportunities, and classroom field placements, graduates are well prepared to enter a baccalaureate program. Students leave the program with a wealth of experience and understanding of professionalism as well as the rewards and challenges of teaching in a diverse society.

Degree Requirements
Recommended Course Sequence: (Total Credits: 60)
Spring
- COMM 105 - Introduction to Speech Communication
- PSYC 211 - Human Development Through the Life Span (offered all terms) recommended

Elective - Refer to ARTSYS and the receiving institution’s catalog to select transferable courses, as necessary to meet the 60 credit degree total.
Program Goals
Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:
- Analyze theories and principles of student learning.
- Correlate classroom learning including cultural competence, inclusion, and professionalism to authentic classroom experiences.
- Develop ideas for supporting and empowering diverse families and communities and involving families in their children’s learning through reciprocal relationships.
- Use current and inclusive philosophies to analyze and facilitate differentiating instruction for diverse learners.
Student Notices
The Associate of Arts (A.A.) in Teacher Education is designed for students entering secondary education fields not covered by the A.A.T. Students planning to major in middle school (4-8th grade) as well as physical education, music, health, and art (Pre-K-12th grade) are encouraged to meet with the Education Program Director.
Although the successful completion of a pre-professional basic skills test (e.g. SAT, ACT, Praxis Core) established by the Maryland State Department of Education is not a degree requirement, students are encouraged to complete the basic skills assessment once general education requirements in English, math and reading (if applicable) are satisfied. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that qualified test scores are sent to MSDE and the selected transfer colleges/universities. Students are encouraged to earn a minimum grade of C in all A.A. Teacher Education course requirements and work with an Education Program Director to ensure a smooth transfer.
* Students must be in good academic standing in order to participate in field experiences (EDUC 121 , EDUC 126 , and EDUC 131 ); one field experience allowed each term.
Diversity requirement: take ENGL 102 and an additional Diversity General Education course.
