The purpose of the Associate of Science program in Engineering with a concentration in Mechanical/Civil is to prepare students to continue their studies towards a baccalaureate degree in engineering. Students acquire a solid foundation in mathematics, science, and engineering while developing their ability to think critically and solve problems.

Program Goals


Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

  1. Acquire a foundation of relevant mathematical, scientific, and fundamental engineering knowledge, including use of computer tools and applications.
  2. Apply mathematics, science, and engineering knowledge to effectively engage in the engineering design process including identification of needs, development of practical solutions, analysis, and testing.
  3. Understand the collaborative nature of engineering and be able to effectively engage in teamwork and group projects.
  4. Understand and be able to apply the professional and ethical obligations of engineers and engineering solutions to employers and society.
  5. Effectively communicate solutions to technical problems through oral and written technical presentations.

*If transferring to UMCP, CHEM 134  (offered winter term only) or CHEM 106  must be completed (prerequisite CHEM 105 ).

The following courses are required for this concentration; some courses fulfill General Education requirements: CHEM 105 , ENGR 102 , ENGR 220 , MATH 135 , MATH 136 , MATH 205 , MATH 215 , PHYS 212  and eight Concentration Elective credits (according to transfer institution preferences, select from CAD 101 , CIS 132 , ENGR 221 , MATH 210 , or PHYS 213 ).
