Certificate Requirements
Recommended Course Sequence: (Total Credits: 17)
Program Goals
Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:
- Interpret health record documentation using knowledge of anatomy, physiology, clinical disease processes, pharmacology and medical terminology identify codeable diagnoses and/or procedures.
- Demonstrate comprehension and correct application of medical terminology.
- Demonstrate an understanding of basic healthcare information needs.
- Demonstrate written or oral communication skills in applicable healthcare related situations.
- Utilize critical thinking and problem-solving skills in coding and coding-related areas.
- Demonstrate advanced coding skills.

+One year work experience directly applying codes in an inpatient and/or outpatient care setting within the last 18 months is required in addition to certification to receive credits.
=Two years of work experience directly applying codes in an inpatient care setting within the last three years is required in addition to certification to receive credits.
#HIT 122 awarded only upon successful completion of HIT-297, a one-credit course on ICD-10-PCS.
