The Arts and Sciences Social Work Concentration at Carroll Community College introduces students to generalist social work practice and how individuals, groups, and institutions behave, function, and influence one another. With an emphasis on human diversity and an examination of social issues from a social scientific perspective, we prepare students to enter helping professions and/or transfer into their chosen four-year institution.

Carroll students are expected to check with their chosen transfer institution and consult with a Carroll academic advisor along with ARTSYS in selecting General Education and elective courses.

Programs Goals

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge of generalist social work history, framework, values, and advocacy.
Examine, from a social scientific perspective, selected contemporary social issues (e.g.: racism, poverty, substance abuse, family instability).
Analyze orally or in writing, social science theory and research, particularly as it relates to systems of stratification and discrimination.
Explain the role of human diversity and intercultural difference in shaping the lives, needs, and experiences of individuals and communities.

Student Notices

The following courses are required for this concentration; some courses fulfill General Education requirements: PSYC 101 , SOC 101 , SOC 215 , SOWK 201 ; and one of PSYC 211 , PSYC 212 ; and one of SOC 120 , SOC 205 , or SOC 210 .

Diversity requirement: take SOC 101 and SOC 215

Students may choose to complete this program in an online format. Speak with an advisor to determine if online learning is appropriate.

An Associate of Arts degree requires a minimum of 12 credits of 200-level courses. If SOC 120 is chosen as a program elective, a 200-level General Education or Elective course must be taken.
