The Arts and Sciences Concentration in Creative Writing and Literature prepares students to transfer in an English baccalaureate program. Students in this concentration engage in critical reading, basic literary research, and analysis to prepare for literary study at the 300-level. Throughout the program, students will write both imaginatively and analytically to develop writing skills in various genres. This program aligns with the College’s mission to develop competencies in communication and critical thinking.

  • Writing or Literature Elective - Select an additional literature or writing course (from the below choices)
  • Electives - Refer to ARTSYS and the receiving institution’s catalog to select transferable courses, as necessary to meet the 60 credit degree total.

Program Goals


Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

  1. Explore genres, historical and emergent, that comprise a culture’s body of literature and discourse.
  2. Interpret literary works by considering cultural contexts (cultural values, historical events, or universal themes) to deepen awareness of human experiences.
  3. Write in a variety of genres for different purposes, audiences, and occasions.
  4. Express ideas in crafted language to effectively communicate original ideas.

Student Notices


The following courses are required for this concentration; some courses fulfill General Education requirements:

One Literature course (from ENGL 211  (summer), ENGL 212  (winter), ENGL 225  (spring), or ENGL 240  (fall);

One Writing course (from COMM 210 ENGL 209 , ENGL 218  (fall), or ENGL 219  (spring);

One additional Literature or Writing course; and

One Language or Communications course (from COMM 105 , ENGL 245 , FREN 102  or higher, GERM 102  or higher or SPAN 102  or higher).

Diversity requirement: take ENGL 102  and an additional Diversity General Education  course, Language at the 102 or higher level meets this requirement.

An Associate of Arts degree requires a minimum of 12 credits of 200-level courses.
