An AA in Arts and Sciences with a Concentration in Communication Studies and Journalism prepares students to continue their studies in a baccalaureate degree program or obtain an entry level position in a communication related field. By providing excellent instruction in spoken and written communication skills in different media and for diverse audiences, the program strives to graduate students who are knowledgeable about communication contexts and able to think critically. The program aligns with the College’s mission to prepare students to transfer into a baccalaureate program and to enhance professional writing and speaking skills.

Program Goals


Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

  1. Analyze the meaning of spoken, written, and visual texts to explore effective communication.
  2. Address communication obstacles, including but not limited to cultural differences, when interacting with and observing others.
  3. Use critical reading and listening skills to comprehend spoken, written, and visual texts.
  4. Craft messages in different genres, using various media, with a clear purpose and for a defined audience.

Student Notices


The following courses are required for this concentration; some courses fulfill General Education requirements: COMM 105 ; COMM 201 ; COMM 205 COMM 210 ; ENGL 209  or ENGL 219 ; and six credits of World Language.

Diversity requirement: take ENGL 102  and one of the required Sociology courses.

An Associate of Arts degree requires a minimum of 12 credits of 200-level courses.
