CHEM 106 - Principles of General Chemistry 2


Number of Credits: 4
Determine intermolecular forces in liquids, solids, and properties of solutions.  Describe processes and solve calculations for phase changes, chemical kinetics, general equilibrium reactions, acid/base equilibrium reactions, and chemical thermodynamics. Balance reactions and determine potentials for electrochemical cells.  Describe the principles of nuclear, organic, and biological chemistry. Advanced Placement exam (Chemistry with a score of 5) accepted.  (Fall & Spring Only) Three hours lecture each week. Three hours laboratory each week. Four Credits. Four billable hours.

Pre-requisite(s): CHEM 105  and MATH 099  or MATH 118  with a minimum grade of C or better.
Course Topics:
Intermolecular Forces, Properties of Solutions, Chemical Kinetics, Thermodynamics, Chemical Equilibria, Acid/Base Equilibria, Electrochemical Reactions, Nuclear Processes, Organic Principles
Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Explain the properties that affect liquids and solids and influence their change of state. (PG2, PG3, GE2, GE3)

2. Describe the factors that affect solutions qualitatively and quantitatively. (PG1, PG2, GE3)

3. Explain chemical kinetics and the effects on chemical reactions. (PG2, PG3, GE2, GE3)

4. Solve quantitative problems related to the general factors that affect chemical equilibria. (PG2, PG3, GE2, GE3)

5. Solve quantitative problems related to the specific factors for acid/base equilibria. (PG1, PG3, GE2, GE3)

6. Solve thermodynamic problems based on states, enthalpy, entropy and free energy of reactions. (PG2, PG3, GE2, GE3)

7. Predict spontaneous and non-spontaneous reactions based on electrochemical potentials. (PG2, PG4, GE2, GE3)

8. Recognize the processes involving select nuclear reactions, nomenclature of organic chemistry, and biological chemistry. (PG2, PG4, GE2, GE3, GE7)

9. Perform collaborative laboratory explorations to reinforce understanding of chemical concepts. (PG1, PG4, GE1, GE2, GE5, GE7)

10. Present information on selected topics using various modes of communication (oral, written, and visual). (PG1, PG4, GE1, GE5, GE6, GE7, GE8).
