MATH 121 - Introduction to College Mathematics


Number of Credits: 3
Solve problems and applications in probability, statistics, finances, and matrices. Intended for students in General Studies, Liberal Arts, Humanities, and other non-STEM fields. CLEP (College Mathematics with a score of 50) accepted. (Fall, Spring & Summer Only) Three hours lecture each week. Three Credits. Three billable hours.

Pre-requisite(s): eligibility for ENGL 101  and a satisfactory placement exam score or MAT 095  with a minimum grade of C or better or any college level MATH course. 
Course Topics:
 

  1. Probability using counting principles, probability rules, and normal distributions
  2. Sampling methods, biases, and impact on data representations
  3. Representations of data using various methods
  4. Measures of center and spread
  5. Simple and compound interest
  6. Annuities and loans
  7. Matrix operations and their use
  8. Systems of equations and their applications

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
 

  1. compute probabilities based on various given information using counting principles, probability rules, and normal distributions (GE2)
  2. identify sampling methods, biases, and their impact on data representations (GE1, GE3, GE4)
  3. interpret, analyze, and/or create representations of data, which may include Venn diagrams, histograms, bar charts, pie charts, stem-and-leaf plots, box plots, and frequency distributions (GE1, GE2, GE3)
  4. interpret measures of center and spread given various data or data representations (GE2)
  5. calculate quantities related to simple and compound interest (GE2)
  6. analyze quantities related to annuities and loans (GE2, GE3)
  7. use matrix operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, inverse) to solve problems and applications (GE2)
  8. solve applications involving systems of equations using matrix equations or Gauss-Jordan elimination (GE2)
