MAT 094 - Algebra


Number of Credits: 0
Examine algebraic topics such as linear equations and inequalities, graphing linear equations, systems of linear equations, exponent rules, operations with polynomials, factoring polynomials, and operations on rationals, roots, and radicals. (Fall & Spring) Four hours lecture each week. Zero credits. Four billable hours.

Pre-requisite(s): exemption/completion of ENG 001  , plus MAT 091   with a minimum grade of C or a satisfactory MAT placement measure.
Course Topics:
Solving linear equations and inequalities, graphing linear equations, systems of linear equations, exponent rules, operations with polynomials, factoring polynomials, and operations on rationals, roots, and radicals.
Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
 

  1. Translate, solve, and graph linear equations. 
  2. Simplify expressions, including scientific notation, using rules of exponents. 
  3. Add, subtract, multiply, and factor polynomials. 
  4. Solve systems of linear equations by graphing, substitution, and addition. 
  5. Evaluate linear inequalities, graph solutions, and use interval notation to express the solution set. 
  6. Identify the properties of functions, evaluate functions, and determine the domain and range of a variety of graphs. 
  7. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational expressions and solve rational equations using proportions. 
  8. Evaluate, differentiate, and perform mathematical operations with radicals.  
  9. Solve quadratic equations using factoring and the square root method. 
  10. Apply formulas to a variety of algebraic applications.
