MATH 113 - Finite Mathematics Number of Credits: 4 Solve problems and applications in probability, statistics, finances, and matrices. Intended for students in General Studies, Liberal Arts, Humanities, and other non-STEM fields. CLEP (College Mathematics with a score of 50) accepted. (Beginning Fall 2024- Fall, Spring & Summer Only) Four hours lecture each week. Four Credits. Four billable hours.

Pre-requisite(s): eligibility for ENGL 101 , plus exemption/completion of MAT 091 with a minimum grade of C, a satisfactory MATH placement measure, or any college level MATH course.
Course Topics:
- Probability using counting principles, probability rules, and normal distributions
- Sampling methods, biases, and impact on data representations
- Representations of data using various methods
- Measures of center and spread
- Simple and compound interest
- Annuities, loans, and credit cards
- Matrix operations and their use
- Systems of equations and their applications
Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Compute probabilities based on various given information using counting principles, probability rules, and normal distributions (GE2)
- Identify sampling methods, biases, and their impact on data representations (GE1, GE3, GE4)
- Interpret, analyze, and/or create representations of data, which may include Venn diagrams, histograms, bar charts, pie charts, stem-and-leaf plots, box plots, and frequency distributions. (GE1, GE2, GE3)
- Interpret measures of center and spread given various data or data representations. (GE2)
- Calculate quantities related to simple and compound interest (GE2)
- Analyze quantities related to annuities, loans, and credit cards (GE2, GE3)
- Use matrix operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, inverse) to solve problems and applications (GE2)
- Solve applications involving systems of equations using matrix equations or Gauss-Jordan elimination (with calculator assistance) (GE2)
