MATH 126 - College Algebra


Number of Credits: 4
Examine linear, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and other special equations and functions along with various applications. Explore and expand upon symbolic and numerical representations of mathematical concepts of equations and functions. MATH 126 is a prerequisite for Applied Calculus, MATH-132; designed for students not pursuing Calculus of a Single Variable I, MATH-135.  CLEP (College Algebra with a score of 50) accepted.  (Fall, Spring & Summer) Four hours lecture each week. Four credits. Four billable hours.

Pre-requisite(s): eligibility for ENGL 101  , plus exemption/completion of MAT 094 MAT 095 , or MAT 099   with a minimum grade of C, or a satisfactory MATH placement measure.

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Linear, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and other special equations and functions (such as square root and absolute value) will be studied.

1. Examine rules, properties, and structures of linear and special equations/functions, such as square root, absolute value, exponential, and logarithmic (GE2, GE3)

2. Determine domain and range of various types of equations and functions  (GE2)

3. Write equations and functions in different forms (GE2)

4. Evaluate transformations of various types of functions (GE2, GE3)

5. Solve various types of equations and functions (GE2, GE3)

6. Use various elements to sketch the graph of equations and functions (GE2, GE3)

7. Solve systems of equations with two variables using multiple methods (GE2, GE3)

8. Set up and solve application problems using multiple types of functions (GE1, GE2, GE3)
