CRIM 120 - Juvenile Justice

Discover the prevention, detection, and correction of juvenile delinquency. Examine Maryland laws relating to young offenders, police procedures dealing with youth, and the juvenile court process. Assess the practices of juvenile justice intake, community programs, and the institutional treatment of youth. This course is open to Law Enforcement Academy students only. (All Terms) Three hours lecture each week. Three Credits. Three billable hours.

Pre-requisite(s): eligibility for ENGL 101.
Co-requisite(s): No change.
Pre-/Co-requisite(s): Completion of or enrollment in a certified police academy. This course is not for general credit students.

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Complete written and oral assignments requiring the application and explanation of course topics.
Explain the juvenile process from custody to disposition.
Discuss the causes of juvenile delinquency.
Describe the functions and roles of the workers in juvenile court proceedings.
Discuss juvenile corrections including their purposes and limitations.
Explain the problems inherent in the juvenile justice system and the means available to correct those problems.
