CRIM 225 - Motor Vehicle Collision Investigation


Number of Credits: 3
Conduct basic vehicle collision investigations by using appropriate terminology and investigative procedures. Identify and collect evidence. Demonstrate on-scene investigation by interviewing witnesses and those involved, examining skid marks, taking photographs, and completing the Maryland Automated Accident Report. This course is open to Police Enforcement Academy students only. (All Terms) Three hours lecture each week. Three Credits. Three billable hours.

Pre-requisite(s): exemption/completion of ENG 001 .
Co-requisite(s): No change.
Pre-/Co-requisite(s): Completion of or enrollment in a certified police academy.  This course is not for general credit students.

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
 

  1. Discuss the term Motor Vehicle Collision and the purposes of motor vehicle collision investigations.
  2. Research the duties and responsibilities of the first officer arriving on the scene of a vehicle collision.
  3. Evaluate types of physical evidence that may be present at the scene of a vehicle collision.
  4. Discuss the situations which dictate a need for technical expertise at the scene of a motor vehicle collision.
  5. Demonstrate the procedure to properly interview a witness to a vehicle collision.
  6. Simulate a motor vehicle collision investigation.
  7. Prepare a collision scene report.
