SUAS 101 - Drone Technology 1


Number of Credits: 3
Explore Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (SUAS) through an overview of various drones and applications. Apply best practices and basic controls for flying. Prepare for the Aeronautical Knowledge Test required to obtain FAA Remote Pilot (Part 107) certification (additional $175 fee paid to FAA authorized testing center). Certification is not guaranteed. Additional $250 fee required at registration. (Fall, Spring Only) Three hours lecture each week. Three Credits. Three billable hours.

Pre-requisite(s): exemption/completion of ENG 001 , plus  MAT 094 , MAT 015  , or MATH 113  .

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
 

  1. Implement general regulatory requirements of Part 107 regulations (PG1, PG3).
  2. Interpret operating rules and requirements under Part 107 regulations (PG1, PG3).
  3. Evaluate airspace to include controlled, uncontrolled, and special use airspace (PG1, PG3).
  4. Judge airspace operational requirements (PG1, PG3).
  5. Explain airport operations (PG1, PG3).
  6. Practice aeronautical decision-making (PG1, PG3).
  7. Define physiological factors affecting remote pilot performance (PG1).
  8. Demonstrate basic maneuvers of SUAS flight, including take off, landing and stationary flight (PG2).
  9. Execute a SUAS mission plan (PG2, PG3).
  10. Examine weather-related issues and requirements as they relate to SUAS (PG1, PG3).
  11. Accrue a minimum of 15 hours documented flight time (PG2).
  12. Apply course knowledge to the FAA Aeronautical Knowledge Test (Part 107) (PG1).
